We are a landscape of all we have seen*
*Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988),
American-Japanese landscape architect, sculptor, furniture designer, artist
My artwork often presents different impressions of time, such as the illusion of time compression or expansion, as well as repeated and suspended time sequences. Recent drawings, etchings and artist books have explored the repetition and layering of memories, concealment and revelation, geological forms, and the meeting points of past and present.
I have followed an intertwined path of design and art. After formal studies in landscape architecture and environmental sciences, I continued my observations of the natural world through the Graphic Investigation workshop at the Canberra School of Art in the early 1980s. It was here that my fascination with all things associated with drawing, paper, books and printed inks took hold. Subsequently my art practice developed through travelling and working in Australia and Europe, and included drawings, etchings, artist books, collages, watercolour and gouache colour studies.
My exploration of subject material and experimentation in various media are strongly based on life drawing and landscape colour studies. In recent years, the process of printmaking and the production of artist books has again been a significant component of my art practice. The artist books continue my investigation of 3D spatial forms, and in some instances include digitally manipulated drawings. Responding to poetry sources, connecting text with images through the innovative use of typography and mark-making have been a key part of my development process.
